HPV and Routine Immunization Education
Educational videos explain the value of the HPV vaccine as an early shield against cervical cancer as well as the importance of routine immunization for children.
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 340,000 people died from cervical cancer in 2020, with 90% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Cervical cancer is responsible for too many early deaths and contributes to widening health equity gaps. Fortunately, there is hope: cervical cancer can be largely prevented with the HPV vaccine, and early detection through regular screening saves lives.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant decline in childhood vaccinations globally. The WHO estimates that the percentage of children who received three doses of the vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP3) fell 5 percentage points between 2019 and 2021.
To address vaccine hesitancy surrounding the HPV vaccine and childhood immunization, we collaborated with Wuqu’ Kawoq | Maya Health Alliance and the University of California San Francisco Institute for Global Health Sciences. Our goal was to understand the factors contributing to this hesitancy and to explore a community-centric approach to vaccine outreach. As part of our multi-phase study, we developed and shared culturally and linguistically appropriate educational videos via social media.
All educational videos we created are freely available for public use. These videos were created with health workers and community members from Indigenous communities in Guatemala, which is reflected in the characters and settings of the videos. While the vaccine information is relevant and valuable across various contexts, please reach out if you would like to adapt the videos for different settings (we can help!).
Stay tuned for future project updates to see how tailored, inclusive interventions can address barriers to immunization, equipping communities with the information they need to make decisions for themselves and others.
One of the videos in this collection focused on HPV, specifically how the HPV vaccine acts as an early shield against cervical cancer.
